Wind Power

Wind is a form of solar energy caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the irregularities of the earth’s surface, and rotation of the earth.

Wind turbines are available for small cabins, homes, very large structures and industrial usage. Like solar electric, the power is net metered which significantly shortens the time for system cost payback. Wind farms with several million watt capacity are possible in this area. Sullivan County wind resources have been measured to be $500,000,000 per year. A copy of this study is available from the Sullivan County Division of Planning.

Small Wind Farm in NYS

SASD is currently engaged in a Community Owned Wind Study grant through the USDA Rural Development Agency to investigate possible sites for a small wind farm, similar to the one pictured above, as well as an on-site generation location. The small wind farm could be up to 10MW (6-10 big turbines) and the on-site generation would be ~1MW in one big turbine or several small ones.  Final site selection and design of wind project and financing will be completed in 2012.
